So, yes, before the ocean rowing thing started, I had, like many people who graduated from Oxford University in the late 1980s, I had gone to work in the city of London as a management consultant.

I think that because I'd grown up in a fairly low-income family, my parents were both Methodist preachers, I thought that this yuppie job was going to be everything that I'd ever dreamed of and it was going to bring the salary and the house and all of those trappings of a, quote, successful life.

But I think I knew pretty much from the start that I just felt like a square peg trying to fit into a round hole.

What really brought that home to me was a self-help exercise that I did one night after a particularly tough day in the office when I wrote two versions of my own obituary, the one that I wanted and the one that I was heading for if I carried on as I was.

And I realised that this life that I was living, Working so hard to craft for myself was actually not what I wanted to be doing with my time.

So this was about 11 years into that job.

So I don't know one way or the other.

I can't say that I've had other than that moment in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

I don't waft through life feeling like, you know, a figment of the divine consciousness.

I sometimes wish that I did, but I operate in a very material work environment at the moment, very materialist.

But I also find, I think most people have had some experience of something that defies the materialist paradigm.

Those coincidences that sometimes like concatenate with each other, that you just sort of go, wow, how did all of that happen to bring me here? Or just something that feels like a telepathic connection with another person.
