Um, Roya, what are you finding when you examine the charges behind those executions? Is the Islamic Republic effectively expanding the range of conduct that it can, and punish? And again, going back to, um, how can the Iranians themselves without any legal recourse have change peacefully?
35:38
Uh, well, um, thank you for having me.
35:42
Um, it's a pleasure to be here, um, with, um, you and your guests.
35:47
Um, maybe we can leave, um, the discussion about change, uh, to later because I think, you know, you're talking about, uh, specific, um, cases of, um, uh, executions or death, uh, death penalty.
36:03
Um, and I think you have to look at this, um, repression of lawyers as, you know, recently, uh, the lawyer for, um, uh, Taraneh, uh, Ruhani has been, uh, arrested in Tehran, and he was arrested in 2018, um, uh, and sentenced to a heavy prison sentence that was later overturned, but he was kind of out of, um, out of order, basically, out of, uh, incapacitated for several years.
36:34
Um, this is, um, this is, uh, this is a way to prevent, um, cases, facts of the case to come out.
36:44
So, uh, you're right that, um, the, uh, we know very little about why people are sentenced to this except that they have been in a protest.

They're scared.
36:27
And of course, now there's this counter letter as well that's framing the political prisoners, not as victims, but as political actors.
36:39
Well, you know, I want to go back to the letter and to what Gissou said, which is that we had not seen any expression of solidarity of this sort for political prisoners or, you know, concerns about executions by the academia.
36:55
And you know, more well-known left figures on the left.
37:02
And so I think for, as I talk to some political prisoners I work with, they were in some sense pleasantly surprised that, and they felt like any attention to the situation of Iranian political prisoners is important.
37:23
is welcome and is a good attention but at the same time you know the way the letter was drafted some of them didn't go to the end so their first reaction yet there are no demands and comparing What happens in Iranian prisons? Because some of them now are outside Iran, right? They had to flee.
37:45
They were pushed out of Iran.
37:47
And so they live in the West, they live in Europe, and they live in Canada.

What do you want people to know and what is missing from the human rights conversation when we talk about Iran?
