3:47
So what's your opinion on that? Do you agree with that?
3:49
Well, I think there should be a way to moderate it where everybody in the locker room has a percentage of what is called profit sharing.
4:03
So the proper sharing will be based on how long you stay at the university.
4:11
Let's say you stay all five years at the same university.
4:16
Then each year, your part of the sharing grows so that every player in the locker room, regardless of whether it's the third string center or the starting quarterback or whatever, basically has the same investment.
4:39
And it's kind of like blocking.
4:43
Everything is based on productivity.

15 MINS LATER

19:47
However, if you're not treating any of the kids differently, the antitrust argument is not going to fly.
25:53
we all went.
25:55
Wherever he went, we went.
25:57
For 13 years.
25:58
And pretty much I was kind of his number two guy all that time about who we hire, who we don't bring, who we do this, who we do that with.
26:18
And kind of the same, we had the same group, four or five people that went everywhere with him.
26:28
We were together for those 13 years.

17 MINS LATER

43:52
Are they the best team right now in
speaker_7NARRATOR
7:03
it.
7:04
And I really congratulate those kids about how well they held their gaps and how they paid attention to coaching.
7:14
and how good a job Luther did of coaching them on the technique.
7:20
And it was a fun thing to watch.
7:26
And then the other thing that I noticed with the wide receivers was the fact of how well they're coached at their eyes, their hands, and their finish.
7:39
So you watch them in pregame, and they're throwing deep routes.
7:46
And if you watch their technique and their hands and how they bring the ball in and how they possess the ball is really a key because every guy from the starters, the second team guys, everybody caught the ball the same, brought it in the same, and secured the football.

33 MINS LATER

41:12
to
35:11
Do you believe in BYU's secondary? Are they good enough and are they deep enough or do you still have questions?
35:16
No, I think, you know, they have some very capable guys back there.
35:22
And then they added a couple of linebackers, you know, the kid, I think, kid from Cal.
35:29
I think it's a very good player.
35:32
And I think they added one from either Washington or Oregon, I believe.
35:36
But they, so they, yeah, they're in BYU.
35:41
And the quarterback is very impressive.
38:28
What do you think now?
5:05
... and then we see how he progresses from there
5:07
... well, I think, you know, just to, you know...
5:10
He, he's one of those guys, a good locker room guy.
5:14
He wills his teams to win, his team to win.
5:17
Uh, he has the right demeanor, and, and he, he can, and he has a good sense of the pocket.
5:27
He has a good sense of, of timing.
5:29
And he played at Skyline last year, and then tr- they, he and his brother transferred into, uh, into Alta this year.

10 MINS LATER

15:39
But you can see it happening.
4:56
Loti, yeah
4:57
... player.
4:58
And, um, and I think they added one from either Washington or Oregon, I believe.
5:03
But, but they, uh...
5:05
So they, yeah, they're, they're...
5:08
And, and I, and the quarterback is very impressive.
5:11
You know, he's a good, he's...
6:28
Yep
11:34
Loti, yeah.
11:35
And, um, and I think they added one from either Washington or Oregon, I believe.
11:41
But, but they, uh...
11:43
So they, yeah, they're, they're...
11:44
And, and I, and the quarterback is very impressive.
11:49
You know, he's a good, he's...
11:50
And they've added, I think, a couple of wide outs, a couple more wide outs since, since last spring.
13:05
Yep
8:09
Yeah.
8:10
You know, no matter who has a problem, whether it's a player or assistant coach or whatever, somebody in the building.
8:17
So the head coach is responsible for all those people, the grounds people, he's responsible for those people.
8:23
So, you know, you have a lot of, a lot of, there's a lot of cards on the table.
8:29
Yeah.
8:30
And, and, um, you know, so he, and he's, he's really organized and, uh, And compartmentalize, you know, and then it's up to the AD to take some of that stuff off his plate.
8:50
And I think Mark is a good... sounding board, you know, good experience.
13:17
with? Let's start with Big Fred, who apparently is the guy that...
39:32
Mm-hmm.
39:33
And we weren't gonna really be in, in my third year, we would be productive.
39:44
So I figured it was to b- we wanna build a defense first, then, uh, and, and have an offense that didn't turn the ball over, you know, pretty conservative.
39:57
And then the second year, uh, we were gonna r- rebuild the, you know, start rebuilding the offense.
40:06
The third year we should be able to win.
40:10
And so we stayed with that and, uh, and, and we did.
40:15
We, so we built up a, a program based on defense to begin with.
44:31
Mm-hmm
10:12
Mm-hmm.
10:13
And we weren't gonna really be, in, in my third year, we would be productive.
10:23
So I figured it was to b- we wanna build a defense first, then, uh, and, and have an offense that didn't turn the ball over, you know, pretty conservative.
10:37
And then the second year, uh, we were gonna r- rebuild the, you know, start rebuilding the offense.
10:45
The third year we should be able to win.
10:49
And so we stayed with that and, uh, and, and we did.
10:54
We-- So we built up a, a program based on defense to begin with.

7 MINS LATER

17:40
Mm-hmm
2:45
Go ahead
2:46
...
2:46
I thought that the, I thought the quarterback was, uh, uh, was, was great.
2:54
Um, the receivers, you know, it, he made it look pretty easy, you know, the quarterback did it, on those couple of days and, and, and, and he was hitting the re- he was, he was anticipating the receiver's breaks, and he was throwing the ball to a spot before they even made a break.
3:17
And, um, the timing appeared to be very good.
3:21
I, I think, I don't think the receivers are great.
3:25
Um, I, I think they're okay.

7 MINS LATER

10:09
Yep.
22:53
how important is that to uh look you talked about having that that four-year plan when you you came in and joined and so you know you have to look the motto utah football forever has been trust the process right you have to trust in what you're doing how difficult is that to stick to your guns when you've developed this strategy and things get a little shaky and you want and you start second guessing or or wondering if you should trust it like how tough is is that to do as a coach?
23:25
Well, you just, you just know that, that, that, okay.
23:32
And basically we had, we had turned around four different programs before I took the Utah program.
23:43
And basically a lot of those were, were taking over the last place team and moving them to first place.
23:52
And in each situation, we had a plan and we stayed with it.
24:00
And we didn't panic.
24:03
We built what we had to build.

10 MINS LATER

34:23
And And the question is this, do you ever think about legacy and your legacy, both at Utah in the state in general? And if so, what is it that you want your legacy to be? How do you want fans to remember you?
