What was globalization? What was it supposed to do? Did it actually lead to these outcomes that Thomas Friedman is talking about?
11:58
I think Thomas Friedman is a very intelligent man.
12:01
I'm not here to disparage Thomas Friedman, but I do think that some of the ideas that he shared in various of his books haven't quite been borne out.
12:14
And I don't think there are data to support the assertions that he's made in those books.
12:20
I have a colleague, Pankaj Gemawat, whose work I've learned a lot from, who used to refer to some of these ideas as globaloni.
12:28
This notion that the world is perfectly flat, that things are homogenizing, that we're all becoming the same, that there will all be one type of product that will live in one type of market with homogeneity and uniformity across the board.

If you need any more evidence, just look at today and the way that the world is becoming less globalized as we speak.

How do I use them? What methods am I using to get the final output, the final risk? So I've explored a lot of

Do you think certain jobs are going to disappear forever? Do you think that this technological revolution is different because it's going to happen faster? What are your initial thoughts?
31:40
tackle that question directly but let me just first point out that bill bill gates is a very very smart human and uh so so betting against bill gates is not sort of my recommended path and while i i agree with him on so many points that he made in this essay there are some areas where i'm a bit more sanguine i don't necessarily agree that we should create human reserve jobs uh if you think about that that's a form of protectionism it's a form of of putting in artificial frictions into the market by saying, hey, we can't be as efficient or productive as possible in these areas because we're going to allow these humans who are less efficient at doing things to do them for a while.
32:22
Now, I agree that we need to create safeguards for the transition.
32:27
We need to be very, very careful about how AI is rolled out.
32:30
It will certainly transform everything that we do, especially how we work.
32:36
But I don't think going in and putting a finger on the scale and saying, oh, these things are reserved only for humans is the right way to go about it.
33:58
You know, you need the senior lawyers, but then how are we going to get the next generation of senior lawyers if you don't train them up?
34:06
Yeah, that's right.
