85 | How lazyness invites discovery – Robert Root-Bernstein
0:11
So one of the studies we did actually looked at a group of 40 scientists, and we interviewed the scientists over 30 years trying to figure out what makes a scientist more successful than some of the people who were average.
0:28
Very interesting group of 40 because it had four Nobel Prize winners, including Feynman and Pauling, and a group of people at the very bottom who, who never got tenure or just had never made it past an assistant professorship, so quite diverse.
0:47
So part of the interview questions were, you know, what do you do with your extra time and all that kind of stuff.
0:53
All of the people who got into the National Academy or got a No-Nobel Prize said basically, "I'm a lazy son of a bitch," which obviously was not true.
1:04
But, you know, when we dug further, what they actually meant was they would work on problems until they hit a wall, and then they would walk away from it.
