Well, what it was is I'm the son of a Baptist minister, and I had very restricted and s- you know, strict upbringing.

I wasn't allowed to listen to rock music, go to dances, go to concerts, and all that sort of stuff.

But I had a secret little radio I would listen to at night.

I became aware of certain things.

And then I happened to walk through Waikiki one day and I found some magazines that some British tourists had left behind.

And I was maybe 15 years old, and there were pictures of all these disheveled-looking guys with weird clothes and guitars and everything, and I couldn't figure out what it was.
