Can you sketch for us a little bit more the, the broad scope of your father's thinking?

Well, of course, he's very well known for leaking the Pentagon Papers and as a very important resistor to the Vietnam War, whose actions are actually more extraordinary fruit in helping to bring down the Nixon administration because of the overreach of Nixon and his plumbers in trying to silence him.

But people were not so aware that the whole episode of the Vietnam War and his preoccupation with that was really a kind of detour from his lifelong preoccupation with the threat and danger of nuclear war.

And that's where his career began in the late 1950s, working for the Rand Corporation, working on the question of how you could present an effective deterrent Precisely, in particular, by making sure that an enemy could not just simply knock out your command and control with a bomb on Washington or something like that.

How could you make sure that we could present a credible deterrence? So his preoccupation was not fighting nuclear war, but trying to prevent it.

He later, though, began to see that the whole thing was a kind of insane and murderous, and as he would call it, evil system, which he characterized as a doomsday machine, that we had created this apparatus that had the capacity to destroy, you know, all human life.

And it was kind of an idea that was popularized in, you know, the Doctor Strangelove, that movie.

Robert, do you have, as you read through these notes, are there particular thoughts? I've

Uh, talk about he- how he was chosen, um, the first Latin American pope, the first Jesuit pope, and also how he even came to take the name Francis.

Uh, that's all, I think, all, also very [laughs] significant.

He came to Rome after the, uh, the...

For the conclave, after the resignation of Pope Benedict.

Uh, he was at retirement age.

He was expecting to return back to Argentina.

Uh, but instead he kind of electrified the conclave, uh, which is the meeting of cardinals where they elect the pope, uh, by giving a very short speech of just a few minutes where he said, "The greatest problem facing the church does not come from outside, it comes from within," from what he called, uh, ecclesial narcissism and introversion, a church that's focused in on itself.

If you can talk about what are the next steps, Robert Ellsberg? And also, what it was like to edit the pope's book? Um, and then what happens now that he has died?
