Does Andy Burnham’s government have the guts to deliver growth?

Hannah PrevettHOST
Richard, what has been the reaction from business people? And do you know, did they express to you any preference for Mahmood over Healy, for example, or vice versa?

Richard FletcherGUEST
Well, I think we saw an immediate reaction in the market in that defence stocks rallied after his announcement.

Richard FletcherGUEST
Babcock International, they make warships and maintain many of our naval bases.

Richard FletcherGUEST
So, you know, I think the manufacturing and defence sectors are pleased with the appointment.

Richard, could you be upbeat and portray the lucky General Burnham, how things might actually be okay?

I know they sometimes get clubbed together when we talk about traditional news sources, but it has played out quite differently, hasn't it, in newspapers, in radio and then in television?

Richard FletcherGUEST
And just before getting to what we found, I can say a little bit about how we got there.

Richard FletcherGUEST
So this year we asked a new question to those people in the survey who said that they're currently not using each of these offline sources on a weekly basis.

Richard FletcherGUEST
And in short, what we did is ask them a follow-up question which said, well, if you don't use it now, did you used to use it but you've stopped? Or is it because you've never used this source on a weekly basis? And what this data allows us to do, it allows us to work out which sources have what we call high adoption rates.

Richard FletcherGUEST
So this, in other words, is how many people have ever used them on a regular basis.

But anything that you've looked at in the last 13 years, Richard, that points to future news habits, because I think one of the points that you raised in your chapter as well is that in many cases, it's less about a growth on some of these social media platforms and more about a fall in existing news websites, etc., in terms of that crossover that we've seen for ginsengs.
Burnham and Business - what could a PM refresh do for the UK economy?

Richard FletcherGUEST
But maybe given that he has to unite this party, that he has to get the MPs, that he does need to have advisers from both sides of the political spectrum.

Richard FletcherGUEST
Because at the end of the day, the Labour Party has this huge majority, which is actually in some ways a disadvantage, right? Because you've got MPs who know they're probably only here for one term.

Richard FletcherGUEST
former local councillors, you know, the way that Labour MPs get selected, they're local people, right? So they're going to go back, lots of them are going to go back that have done one term and then they're going to go back to do whatever they were doing before or something else, but they're still going to be living among the same people.

Richard FletcherGUEST
So they have to answer to lots of their friends who are probably to the left of the Labour Party.

So, I mean, uh, we've been tracking trust now for, uh, about 10 years and, and over that time in the countries where we've got data from, from 10 years ago compared to now, the sort of long-term picture is, is one of decline.

Richard FletcherGUEST
But when you look at a bit more detail, you know, there are, there are sort of patterns within that.

Richard FletcherGUEST
So we saw pre-pandemic quite a, a steep decline in trust in news, uh, in many countries.

Richard FletcherGUEST
And then during the pandemic, um, there was an uptick, um, It's quite a brief one.

Mitali MukherjeeHOST
One question that is fascinating and comes before the how do we get them to pay is why do they feel the need to pay and subscribe to news? What do we have in terms of colour there?
