Doctor, how did we get here where we're suddenly debating again how to keep people safe around bikes?
4:28
Great, great, great question.
4:31
Um, It's a bit of a journey, so I can try to take you on it.
4:35
About five years ago, we saw the relaxation of import standards for e-bikes into the country, which has allowed a bunch of illegal type of unsafe electric motorcycles into Australia over the last several years.
4:50
But also at the same time, there has just been a massive growth in personal e-mobility device use.
4:56
We just finished some research at UQ, and we've seen that basically half of all the e-mobility devices that people own today were purchased in the last two to three years.
5:07
And over the course of the last five years, there's been a nearly 300 to 400% growth in the purchase of these devices.
6:52
And is it hard to put the genie back in the bottle now, given that these devices are already here? Are we going to need an illegal e-bike amnesty or buyback?
4:21
