On the sidelines of all of this, we see in academia
24:14
a rising idea of white ethnic superiority.
24:18
And so there are a series of academics at major institutions who are writing books and papers that are arguing for white supremacy.
24:29
And these are very prominent people.
24:30
Teddy Roosevelt talked about race suicide, that it was suicide to allow immigrants into the country because they were going to outbreed the white population that was already here.
24:40
But probably the most important was Madison Grant's The Passing of the Great Race, a book that came out in 1916.
24:47
This book sold over a million copies.

9 MINS LATER

So how did those debates develop? What were some of those perspectives that were offered? And what was the outcome? Was the Border Patrol's authority limited in any way or was an opportunity missed there to kind of control it in the cradle?
1:48
I'm keen to see how he reacts at that distance.
1:51
Yeah, look, he's obviously never stepped out of that trip before, but the feel I got from him the other day and the way he races, I feel like he should be able to enjoy it.
2:03
Obviously, he's quite a casual customer as well, and look, yeah, hopefully there's a little bit of pressure in the race like there was when I won on him two starts ago, staying in the 1800, and being in amongst runners probably didn't work to his advantage the other day.
2:21
So hopefully this stepping out on the trip does the trick.
2:52
You might end up stable jockey for Chris Waller if you can win two straight on Emirates.
2:57
Yeah, that'd be pretty cool, wouldn't it? They'd be pretty happy with me, I could imagine.
3:03
But no, his win last start was really good.
3:07
Obviously, he's got his quirks and a couple of little tricks.
43:08
Uh, what has changed?
43:11
Hey, Lawrence, thank you so much for having me on.
43:13
Um, yeah, the Border Patrol, since the 1940s, has been able to operate within 100 miles of borders and coastlines, um, which is a vast area inside the United States.
43:24
Roughly two-thirds of the American population already lives in that border zone.
43:29
So scholars and people who live in the border zone have been saying for decades that that is already too big, and is a zone that, uh, allows the Border Patrol to use its racial profiling to act violently towards immigrants and citizens, um, and to violate the constitutional rights of citizens and immigrants alike, um, in an area that's a, a large section of the United States.
43:54
So what's changed in the Trump administration is they've taken what was before hidden, somewhat, uh, in the border zone, and moved that into large American cities like Minneapolis, and brought that into the bligh- bright lights so everyone can see it.
45:08
A- and they've always had this notion of having powers that are different from other law enforcement agents.
45:17
That's right.
