Raúl Sánchez on Poetry, Bilingual Writing, Community, and the Power of Finding Your Voice
12:33
So can you tell us a little bit about that, like the challenges that, that might come from that approach?
R
12:39Raul SanchezGUEST
Yes, actually, um, um, what I have experienced is if I try to translate something that is, uh, a complete 100% Mexican slang into an English word that it expresses the same thing, I will be using more words, more adjectives and more, uh, elements on the construction of the sentence, and yet it'll still sound an interpretative meaning what it means in English.

Whereas the sound of the two words or three that I used in Spanish will sound completely different.

So I try to make sure that, uh, by doing the translation, I make it sound in a way that is understandable, and I try to do it bilingualism.

Sometimes I have so... a, a poem that is line by line translated, and I use a second voice that says it all.

In fact, uh, just as an example, on the second book, which is this one, When There Were No Borders, and, uh, it is side by side, and it just says the words exactly.
