Can I just jump in there with, if I understand this right, is methylation, is that the process essentially by which a gene is kind of switched on or off?
2:46
So DNA methylation consists of adding the methyl group to the DNA molecule without changing the underlying DNA sequences.
2:54
This is how it's possible to have the same DNA sequence in all cells, but some cells have DNA methylation usually associated with repression, so meaning that the gene is off.
3:06
And if you don't have DNA methylation, it's usually associated with active transcription.
3:11
Now, there are lots of studies recently showing that's not always the case.
3:16
And in some cases, some level of DNA methylation is associated with genes being on.
3:22
So there's still a lot of work done in the field to try to understand the context of when DNA methylation leads to activation of genes and when it leads to repression.
