So what kinds of declines in coral reef health and existence have you seen in your own lifetime, and what has that actually looked like?

Philippe CousteauGUEST
I actually did a piece for Discovery several years ago down in the Florida Keys, and I, and I knew one of the filmmakers that had filmed there for decades, and so we got him to give us some footage that he had shot in the 1980s.

Philippe CousteauGUEST
And then this was probably, I wanna say 2008 maybe, so it's quite a bit ago.

Philippe CousteauGUEST
And we went back to the exact same spot that he filmed, and we played the footage side by side.

Philippe CousteauGUEST
Having grown up diving and snorkeling and seeing these places, you know, one of the challenges we face is this idea of shifting baselines, right? That every successive generation's baseline for the health of the ecosystem and the environment is what they were first exposed to.

Philippe CousteauGUEST
As I said earlier, even my grandfather saw a massive decline from the '40s to the '60s that raised alarm bells for him.

So I think that is what's really sad, and that's been what's really hard and the worst things that have really happened, I think, since, since the last time we talked.

Philippe CousteauGUEST
Yeah, it's counterintuitive, I think, that, that, you know, right now, uh, this summer around the world we've seen record-breaking heat waves, the hottest June and July in history, the hottest sea surface temperatures ever s- recorded.

Philippe CousteauGUEST
We have massive, a heat dome in the United States for weeks, you know, over the j- Fourth of July weekend that was cooking the entire East Coast.
