And then so when new varieties are put forward, like what role does CNPTC play in evaluating them? Is it after registration or is your evaluation part of the registration process?

Peter WattsGUEST
Yeah, we are involved in the pre-registration process in terms of testing new lines that are being brought forward by breeders.

Peter WattsGUEST
So we do some of that analysis along with the Grain Research Laboratory of the Canadian Grain Commission and some of the industry partners.

Peter WattsGUEST
Once the lines have been approved for registration, then we start to receive samples in the subsequent year through the seed companies that have contracted those lines for registration.

Peter WattsGUEST
So we use our micro-malting, Joe White micro-malting system in particular to evaluate the new lines after registration with those smaller quantities and we'll test for the malt quality, barley and malt quality in processing.

Peter WattsGUEST
And then we share that information with our members and our customers in those early days to get them used to the quality profile of these new varieties.
5 MINS LATER

Don TseHOST
So could you speak to those two varieties specifically? Like what are you, you know, as you compare the two, you mentioned agronomics and disease package, what are your thoughts on those two varieties specifically?

Alice McFarlaneHOST
So Peter, first of all, let's talk about that that big and important market, China.

Peter WattsGUEST
Probably 10, 15% of malt barley exports went to the U.S. and then a little bit to other markets like Japan, for example.
