What did Kevin Smith's experience teach you about the potential hidden inside an everyday act of kindness, and what steps transformed that single moment from an inspiring story into a structured global initiative?

Well, I think first of all, the coincidence that his experience and my experience of random opportunities for kindness turned out to be the same thing, and we thought one and one might make three or 10 or 100.

Um, what had happened to Kevin is he left his wallet, uh, in a store, and he was just panicking, realizing that it had all his ID and credit cards and, oh, what a mess.

And there was a ring on the doorbell, and it was a young woman that he didn't know at all, and she said, "Here, you left this on the floor in the store." And he was so overwhelmed with gratitude that he...

this gnawed away at him, I have to do something with this.

Meanwhile, in one of my nonprofits, firststar.org, starting about a dozen years ago, I invented a course called Random Opportunities for Kindness, which I teach across the country in our 15 academies for teenage foster kids.

I usually teach it to 10th graders along the lines of you're walking down the street and there's an old lady fast asleep, and she's in rags.

If you could give your younger self one piece of advice about using influence responsibly, what would it be?

So if you could share with us how this all transpired, that would be amazing.

I think one of the ironies of being of a certain age, that would be me, is you eventually work out what you're good at.

You work out by pattern recognition, I'm never going to be a concert pianist, and I can't dance, and various other long list of things that I'm no good at all, but I'm great at doing some things.
