Peter Micciche

Mayor of Kenai Peninsula Borough

Oct 21, 2026

37:28
Peter?
37:30
Yeah, we've done a lot of work in solid waste.
37:32
The cost doubled in five years.
37:36
And we have flattened that increase now through efficiencies.
37:40
We shut down recycling almost completely for a few months.
37:46
Some waste streams almost a year.
37:49
We are not returning to plastics because as you will read in like the Berkeley White Paper, one of the most liberal environmentally conscious universities in the nation, they've just recognized the fact that you have a larger carbon footprint by recycling plastics than you do by not recycling plastics.

One, what do you think is the borough's greatest asset? And on the flip side, what do you think is the borough's greatest challenge or what's the greatest challenge the borough's facing? And Peter, we're going back to you.
1:58
So tell me about your philosophy of government and why you think, you know, the people resonate with it.
2:04
Well, I honestly in my heart believe that there's no purpose for government other than serving people at the basic services they request, right? So what I really love about this government, so the state, gets into the insatiable services, the health and social services, the everything for everyone stuff.
2:25
And we don't.
2:25
We have literally the purest form of government, the services we deliver, the services people asked for at the ballot box.
2:34
And we deliver them at the lowest cost possible, quality services at the lowest cost possible.
2:40
And In my heart, I believe that we should be invisible.
2:45
Like, the roads should just get plowed, right? The schools should just be maintained.

Do you think this thing's actually gonna happen? And what do you think about the special session?
