She's back in Ireland.

Yeah.

Yeah, so la- last Sunday, we published the first pictures of Anita Freeman to be taken in Dublin, um, in the last 10 years.

Um, now, obviously for the last 10, for the, for the last decade, she's been living abroad.

She, firstly over in Spain, then in Dubai with, uh, her partner, Sean McGovern.

Um, and u- and then, um, basically we got wind last week that, that she had returned to Ireland, so-

Mm.

Um, so it would've been seized, I think it was back around 2017 under...

Or is it outside, I think, is it?

Well, basically what happened was, um, that night, um, Andy Murray w- or Andrew Murray was drinking inside in the pub with a, with another man called, uh, John Griffiths.

Um, and basically what happened over the course of the evening was, um, the, basically they get, became involved in an altercation with another man that wasn't known to them.

He was on a work night out, hadn't interacted with them.

But, uh, the guards in, uh, the guards in Crumlin, they got a call at about 11:55 saying a man had been badly assaulted outside the pub.

So, um, the guards went out, and when they arrived there, they found this man, this injured party, on the ground.

Um, and, uh, basically h- he's, his, his top was covered in blood, his, uh, his eye was swollen, his, um, hi- uh, uh, his lip was cut.

Yeah

Yeah.

Yeah, absolutely.

So look, you know, the council took possession of the house.

The council say that they tried to employ contractors to come in and to refurbish the house, and that this was met with, um, this was met with intimidation.

Now, they've never specified what that intimidation was.

Um, I know at a council meeting last month, they spoke about how, uh, various different members of council staff have been intim- intimidated by things like pipe bombs being put under their cars.

Um, but they haven't said specifically that something like this occurred in relation to Sean McGovern's house.

Yeah.

Yeah

... um, Ciocolata and a number of members of her family left Ireland.

They emigrated to the United States and set up home in California.

Um, and for the next seven years, Ciocolata lived a relatively, you know, productive life.

She had her own nail salon.

Um, she was making money.

She had bought a car.

Yeah.

What do we know about the background? I know it's probably not, it, it's slightly obscure, like a lot of these things are.

Yeah.

Well, I mean, this part of a feud that's been going on for approximately the last eight years out in West Dublin, um, in Ronanstown, Lucan, Clondalkin, um, and the earliest, the earliest incident that we can trace to it is probably going back to 2018 when there was this big brawl in a car park out in West Dublin, and it involved a, a big group of young men aged in their late teens into early mid-twenties.

Um, and that didn't resolve any issues, that brawl.

It actually made things worse.

It generated a lot of acrimony in the area, and then what we saw was people involved in criminality were aligning themselves with both factions, um, and, and pretty soon the feud began to escalate.

Um, and pretty soon we started seeing shootings, um, you know, fire bomb attacks on houses, um, the usual kind of levels of intimidation, um, that, you know, we, we, we started seeing across the country-

And of course, it only, y- you know, it can really escalate as we've seen in other areas.

So tell me about the investigation then into her death.

Well, basically, after, after she passed away, there would've been the immediate Spanish police investigation, and the murder suspicions did start to arise fairly quickly.

In the aftermath, in the days after, Dermot McArdle basically gave two differing accounts.

One of them was that Kellyanne had committed suicide, and the second was that she had seen their three-year-old son out on the balcony and had rushed out to prevent him falling over the balcony, but in her haste, she had tripped and fallen over the balcony, and that he had tried to grab her but was unable to, and that she had fallen to the ground.

So over the ensuing days, obviously, her body had to be brought back to Ireland.

She was actually flown back on a jet owned by Larry G- Goodman, the, the beef baron, because he employed a number of members of Dermot McArdle's family.And obviously, there was a period of grieving, but questions did begin to arise because there was a witness to this tragedy, and the witness was Dermot McArdle's three-year-old son.

And basically, he made comments to family members, to Kelly Ann's family members, that really, really did cause them to ask questions of the account that Dermot McArdle had given.

Preceding that, his, his time in prison while his appeals were going on, he was at the center of, of a court case in Ireland.

Tell us, I suppose, the context in which that, that he suffered this, these injuries.

Well, Mason was 11 years old at the time.

He was, he was out in the school playground, I think it was at around half 10 in the morning.

Um, his little brother was a short distance away, 10 years old.

Um, Mason wa- was out playing when a, when another 11-year-old walked up behind him and plunged a knife into his back.

Um, obviously, there would've been panic.

Um, the, whoever was monitoring the yard fairly quickly rang 999.

That was another interesting bit about, you know, Natalie speaking to you and telling us that, you know, h- he didn't just suffer this wound, but there has been an impact on the family in, in loads of ways ever since.

Tell us about John O'Neill and what, what, what he's in prison for.

Well, John O'Neill has spent the, the last 20 years behind bars, or the last 22 years behind bars, for the murder of a lady called Rosemary Dowling.

Um, now, Rosemary was, uh, a mother of two who ran a small CD shop on Aungier Street, um, and unfortunately, she was, she was brutally murdered on the evening of October 24, 2005.

Um, basically, what happened was John O'Neill would have been somebody who was known to be a chronic alcoholic.

He had spent the day in the pub, um, drinking, and on his way home that evening, he passed by Rosemary, who he would have known for...

Well, he told Gardai later he would have known her for about a year.

Um, now, Rosemary was also somebody who struggled with, uh, with alcoholism, um, and-

[soft dramatic music] Now, obviously, I think when he did come to court, he offered a manslaughter plea.
