I want to provide my general view of the summit more of a strategic approach.

The pageantry surrounding their latest summit underscored the importance both leaders place on strategic stability in this most consequential relationship.

It's because the Europeans realize what the stakes are for them.

Are you still working in that regard or is that something from the past?

That is from the past.

I mean, I climbed aboard Soviet ships when we brought one into Virginia, for instance, as part of a detente before the end of the Cold War.

So that goes back a ways.

And I did intelligence for the chief of naval operations.

And when I was at the Center for New American Security, my civilian hat as a senior advisor to the CNO was putting together the intelligence on the Gulf as well, even though I primarily focused my career on Asia-Pacific.

It's just that the wars were happening in the Middle East more than they were in Asia.
