Elijah's experience details a spinning object or the whirlwind that came over him, and a chariot of fire.

So the question is, was it the chariot of fire that was spinning, or was it a beam that came down and took him up? It's not a far stretch to say that this was an actually, a spinning object that was above him that took him up into it.
