I worked with my mentor, the late Dorothy White, and my goal was to work with her, work under her, work with her for the rest of my career.

During my fellowship, Dorothy had surgery, heart surgery, and had a very serious complication where she was, um, left with essentially very poor heart function, and she had to undergo a heart transplant.

So she was out for about, um, a year and a half to two years, and she came back the, my last year, in the year that I was a first-year attending, but we had lost a lot of time, and I had lost a lot of traction on my research because she was not there.

And around that time, I met my husband, my future husband, and he was training.

He was finishing his training, and he was recruited to UNC in North Carolina, which is where we ended up because we had just gotten married, but UNC didn't have a position for me.
