What would he be calling you about? What would be a typical conversation?

Usually just to visit, how are you doing? How's Shirley? How are the kids? And we just would have that kind of a chat.

I mean, when I would bring up some political thing, he would say, oh, we're getting it worked out.

We're getting it worked out.

Don't worry about it.

Or so-and-so was going to help me with it.

I mean, we never got deeply into it.

But you talk about the election night, what happened election night.

How did this all come about?

Well, there's not a whole lot for you to know.

I was just a normal guy in a family of a building contractor building his boon contracting company.

My brother and I, when we were teenagers, worked as day laborers pushing concrete wheelbarrows and toting lumber and helping build things around Nashville.

And then we went to high school.

I played on the athletic teams.

I did a lot of singing around Nashville just for fun.

Am I right or wrong?

Tell me about growing up with your family.

I'll never forget, at an early age, as you said, hitchhiking [laughs] to Nashville when I was two years old.

[laughs] And, uh, my dad, a building contractor, architect, and he joined his uncle, uh, Uncle Jack Boone, in Nashville, uh, and eventually owned a company, and I was able to help him do that.

But yes, I'm, we moved to Nashville, my younger brother, a year younger than me, Nick, and then two sisters, and we grew up in Nashville.

And I, except for Dinah Shore, uh, who's the famous, uh, s- singer, sh- she and I are the only, uh- Celebrity, uh, singers that I can think of that ever actually grew up in Music City, USA, Nashville.

Uh, and it's called Grits.

And let me tell you something.

This is true.

Well, I grew up in Nashville, Tennessee.

Uh, I'm a country boy.

My dad a building contractor, mom a registered nurse.

Very practical professions.

But we were, as so many people in Middle Tennessee were and are, we were churchgoers, we were church members, and, uh, I grew up believing and, and was baptized when I was barely 13.

So in my teens, I was thinking of myself, seeing myself as a Christian, a child of God, and really l- living a good, wholesome life, and dating Shirley Foley, the daughter of Red Foley of the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Who, for those who don't know Red's career of music, was a big star

Very big country music artist, but his wife had died.

In fact, his first wife had died too.

So I sat Red Foley down in a, in their b- nook.

They had a much nicer home than ours out on Lone Oak Road.
