Yeah
17:19
... pre-AI.
17:20
Uh, you know, I think, like, Ian McGilchrist's work, uh, on, you know, like, the right and the left brain was popular before AI.
17:27
Uh, like, people are, I think, like, realizing that, you know, you, you kind of hit a limit with, uh, you know, just materialism or, like, rationalist materialism or, you know, like, everything emerges from matter.
17:38
And there's no, like, real magic in the universe.
17:40
It's just kind of like we have a bunch of dead atoms, and then, like, you put them together, and then th- there's humans.
17:46
But then you die, and, like, who gives a shit? Um, and so I think, like, there's been pushback.

Wow
23:44
too.
23:45
I'll go back to the piece and then I'll explain why.
23:49
Some of these kids who society or the people around them even would be like, they're just totally lost in there.
23:55
They can't speak, they're autistic, whatever.
23:57
When they figured out how to unlock their communication, would be talking about basically something equivalent to the Akashic Records.
24:08
There's this collective shared memory.
24:10
Or they talked about actually the reincarnation of one of their friends who had passed away and they all saw his spirit at the thing and separately told their parents that they saw him there.

What are some people or things that recently have made you more optimistic about the world?
8:38
Nice
8:39
...
8:39
Avalon, Rhode Island, New Jersey.
8:40
And, like, it just wasn't my passion, and so knew that that was not gonna be the thing.
8:43
Almost went to business school, and then found this company, Breather, on AngelList and applied to work there.
8:49
Was unemployed for four months 'cause I'd quit my job to go to school.
8:52
Uh, and literally just interviewed at the one company.
9:28
Completely.
17:45
But just the question of how can we turn this into an optimistic vision of things doesn't get asked enough unless you're sort of in this optimistic space.
17:55
I mean, you've anticipated the topics of one of my essays and I've like touched on this like a little bit before, but I actually almost fell for the pessimism on the job front too, where like, I think the like steel man for this case is like, you know, we all believe that, that new jobs will be created and it'll be this bonanza and we'll all be like nuclear fusion reactor repairman or something in the future and like things will be totally good but in the short term like the thing that worried me was ai will be good enough to replace the junior people it won't get good enough to replace the senior people and then we have this like weird gap of people who would have been trained otherwise who don't get trained and can't become senior people and And the job numbers kind of support that it's not a great time to be a new college grad.
18:40
I think what this misses, what I missed, are a couple of things that I think are actually...
18:45
I think it's going to be a bonanza time to be curious.
18:48
And you have to be good at this stuff.
18:50
You can't just lazily wait and hope that someone is now looking for a guy that...
18:55
Very easy jobs are probably going to be harder to come by, actually.

22 MINS LATER

41:01
Is there something that's captivated you recently that's just, you can't get rid of it, you keep thinking about
28:54
But it's not
28:55
toppling a big...
28:56
It's like a bunch of these net new things where it's not replacing the whole SaaS industry, which has made a ton of money.
29:03
nibbles around the edges and makes a bunch of things more efficient, but doesn't go out and replace companies.
29:08
For that piece that you talked about, I looked back, you mentioned the horse and carriages and the Model T, there's a picture of Fifth Avenue during the Easter parade in New York City in 1903, and it's all horse and buggies, and there's one car.
29:19
And you fast forward just a decade, and that same picture in that same location is all Model Ts and all cars and one horse and buggy.
29:26
I love that.
31:33
And
18:19
But it is a, you know, teams need a flag, a goal to run towards.
18:25
There is something about building atoms and building weapons and defense systems that is, I guess, just good for the soul.
18:32
I'm no fan of war.
18:33
I think it's something we need to figure out how to get past at some point here.
18:38
But reading Freedom's Forge, it's hard not to get excited about what it means to all of a sudden say, hey, we have to all come together.
18:47
This is an existential thing that we need to build for.
18:50
And then to get out there and do it, there's something animating about that that I don't think software can do in the same way.
