Tomorrow on the show, while the Portland Zoo is almost 200 miles away from Crater Lake, the zoo's biologists have created a lab on the zoo grounds that mimics the environment of the lake, all in order to try and save the Mazama newt that is only found at Oregon's iconic lake.

I don't know if you're a zoo enjoyer, but I dabble.

okay i wouldn't

consider myself an enthusiast but uh

i don't know if i would consider myself an enthusiast i am an aquarium enthusiast we went to a couple of aquariums i love aquariums we did two aquariums but the portland zoo is is just so good like like i can't even describe it it's amazing it's honestly an amazing experience very very cool yeah a bunch of fun stuff but we're back we're here and we're throwing it back with reality fracture right around the corner We are doomed in the past where we're not...

I also recently went to a brown bear sanctuary in Romania, so a donkey seems like a more reasonable thing to get than a European brown bear.

I do want to say, though, that a lot of modern zoos, like the Oregon Zoo, a lot of the animals that live there really can't live in...

They're just either their habitat, their homes or whatever.

They're just endangered in a sense, or they're not going to live awesome lives.

That was like one of the first moments where I think I realized that the general public had a deep love for bumblebees.

It was that and then Serena, I don't know if you remember, but when we worked with the Oregon Zoo, like back in the day, they did a survey of their members of what animals should we be conserving.

And I think bumblebees also came out as the number one animal that Oregon Zoo members wanted to protect too.

This was from a long time ago, but I think they beat out wolves, the

polar bears.

Tula 2, the young elephant calf at the Oregon Zoo, is the first elephant on the West Coast to receive a vaccine targeting a potentially deadly virus known as EEHV.

Dr. Carlos Sanchez, the zoo's director of animal health, says the new mRNA vaccine is a breakthrough for protecting that species.

Obviously, a calf is very important for the zoo, the community.

The Oregon Zoo train once carried families on a 25-minute ride through Washington Park.

There is now an effort to put that train back on the track.

The college football season kicks off tomorrow.

The railroad at the Oregon Zoo now is over 65 years old, and there is a group currently looking to restore the train ride to its former glory.

The Oregon Zoo will host a Wine for Wildlife event on August 28th and 29th.

It will feature more than 30 local wineries, chats with zookeepers, and live entertainment.

The Wine for Wildlife event runs from 6 to 9, 30 p.m.

The paw, like, his paw was bigger than my head.

Massive.

Oh my gosh.

Which is a 30-year-old tradition at the Portland Zoo that started in the 90s when an award-winning 800-pound pumpkin in Canby was donated to the zoo so that the elephants could squish it.

They got gourds.

They got squash.

And these are, I mean, the size of the elephants' heads.

That's happening this week.

But there's a new special development because sort of the hot it girl of the Portland Zoo this year is Tula 2. who is the eight-month-old baby elephant.
