Do you think for him having a relationship with President Trump makes a difference, or is he just all business and he's approaching this as China's leader and these kind of personal connections he might make don't really make much difference?

To put it in perspective, on the day that Trump arrived China, on People's Daily, which is China's most authoritative official mouthpiece, the US visit was only mentioned in page three, and it was mentioned in a way that looked like China is thinking in parallel universe.

It talked about China promoting civilian diplomacy and encouraging American young people to visit China and how this forms the foundation on bilateral China-US relations.

And on all the big topics and all the expectations and hype are completely not found on Chinese newspaper on the day of President Trump's arrivalSo I think that signals where she comes into that.

And the other thing to bring into the conversation and perhaps, you know, a framework to help us work through these topics is really that the way China conducts its foreign policy is not so much based on a reaction to what Trump does or US-China bilateral relations.

The way I see that is that China under Xi Jinping is moving steadily to implement its global strategy, of which there are two main pivots.

And the first is to strategically pivot away from Western nations towards the Global South, and the second is a pivot away from using economic integration as the primary means towards facilitating unification of Taiwan, towards coupling the use of economic integration with a strong element of showcasing China's, um, ability to outmaneuver America militarily in the Taiwan Strait.
