What would be your biggest tips in terms of submitting a strong claim? Do you need to have a lab notebook or meeting minutes? What do you need to have good documentation? And what are your big tips to avoid being audited?
21:41
Yeah, so I think the word audit scares physicians and anyone else because essentially what the CRA wants to do is they want to substantiate the claim that you put through your shred claim.
21:58
So they want to understand what were you trying to really achieve? What technological uncertainty existed? What did you really do to resolve it? Maybe what experiments or analysis did you perform? And what did you learn from doing all this work? What were the expenditures associated with the work? And typically we have noticed if it's your first time claim or you're claiming a very high amount that doesn't justify the other hats that a physician might be wearing, then they might ask questions, for example.
22:32
But I think I don't want physicians to say we were innovating or we were experimenting because that's very vague.
22:41
So instead, if they're able to explain this in the narrative that we were trying to determine whether X could be achieved under Y conditions, existing approaches couldn't reliably produce the desirable result.
22:55
And then we hypothesize that challenging A and B might resolve the problem.
23:02
We tested these approaches and then the first failed because of X, the second failed because of Y, and then the third succeeded because of Z.

If there was one piece of advice that you had for Canadian physicians and surgeons in terms of investing in their innovation and sustaining their innovation, what would that advice be?
