He's so teased up and almost hair metal in the first video, and then afterwards, never again.

Well, he...

I don't think I actually met them.

Oh, I had one meeting, very brief meeting with them about two weeks before we shot.

And then obviously, you know, we started shooting the video.

And at some point in that two-week spell, I overheard him saying to somebody, I'm going to tease my hair up like I've done a couple of times, and that will be the last time I ever do it.

I'm just going to do it this one time because I think he used to do it at the gigs sometime in LA.

What was it like working for these otherwise kind of known from their other sort of like star jobs as working for the Disney Corporation? But did you find that to be a unique experience working with really young adults who were kind of new on the scene?

Well, what about a video? Isn't that awesome? Also a miracle?

Well, yeah, especially usually you only have one day, which probably is about eight or nine hours.

I mean, the thing is, luckily, I'm a big fan.

I mean, I'm even a big fan of people whose music I wouldn't listen to because luckily I spent 10 years working for record labels.

I've been in a couple of bands.

And you realize how hard it is to be an artist.

You know, the illusion of the glamour.

And then to share that with you just made me love him even more.

You know, the illusion of the glamour when you go back to some of the dressing rooms of these people have to hang out in, you realize that, you know, it's a tough job.

And then to share that with you just made me love him even more.

When does like disposable culture become permanent art? When do you see that go down?

Well, I guess when YouTube started, you know, you suddenly had the opportunity to go back and select your own playlist, which was not something you could do with MTV.

And then you start seeing people's comments, which is very interesting when you see that and you get an insight to the people who enjoy that music.

One of the artists I've worked with a lot is Nickelback.

And the thing that's very interesting about the comments on their videos is how often people refer to their family life, their parents, the way their lives have not been perfect, perhaps.

But I mean, it's extraordinarily different from the responses that many other artists have.

And that I find fascinating.

When you eventually found yourself directing Paul McCartney, like my mind's blown, did any part of you recognize this absurd beauty of that circle? I

Had you passed it before? Is there, was there, why, why there, and, and why you, and-

Basically, you, you say, "We're going to do it in this kind of place, blah, blah, blah," and then once the job is awarded, you have a location scout, somebody whose job is just to go and look at locations.

So I guess the location scout was given the treatment, and he or she said, "There's four or five places we should look at." So we all jump in a car, and we spend the day driving around looking at places.

And I think I might have actually seen the Alexandria Hotel before, but not shot there.

And it was a pretty crummy hotel downtown LA, but had this wonderful texture and this fantastic ballroom, which is where they sit on the sofa and whatnot.

And, um, so you go in there and you go, "Yep, this is gonna work.

Okay, we'll shoot something here, something here, and something here." Then you, uh, have the rest of the day off, and you do other business, and then another day you all come back with the cameraman, the grip, the chief electrician, um, the, uh, two or three people from production.

Yeah.
