We just talk about that, which is kind of an interesting collaboration idea.
5:37
Yeah, it wasn't.
5:39
It's probably different than the collaborations you've done.
5:41
And I'm not sure how.
5:42
But we had one of my people in Hollywood knew one of his people in Hollywood and Then they had one of those conversations.
5:50
We should get these two together and see if they want to do something.
5:53
And so we did.

23:03
How about publishing? Just your thoughts on publishing, the pros, the cons.
17:51
6:50
Sabes, yo...
6:58
Crecí amando leer, aunque nunca me imaginé a mí mismo siendo autor un día.
7:01
Simplemente parecía demasiado irrealista.
7:03
7:38
Y luego, cuando tenía 28 años, me senté y escribí The Notebook.

12 MINS LATER

19:46
Entonces, ¿cómo decidiste hacer algo juntos? Alguien en mi equipo en Hollywood conocía a alguien en su

So this partnership might have happened over 20 years ago.
2:59
Yeah, it might have.
3:00
And it was funny.
3:01
When I think of Knight's work, sure, you remember the twists and everything.
3:04
But what I remember are really well-developed characters.
3:08
And I remember character journeys, right? I mean, if you look at The Sixth Sense, it's a journey of figuring out who you really are.
3:16
We've both been into trying to craft real people.

Donovan meets a young woman who challenges the way he sees the world.

(laughs)
16:35
... that's been fertilized, okay? And, and then the egg splits.
16:40
So we're not talking fraternal twins, two eggs fertilized.
16:43
One egg, and then it splits.
16:46
And then one egg goes off to be raised by one father, and the other egg goes off to be raised by someone else entirely different.
16:54
So, I wrote the novel.
16:55
I mean, I remember looking at the script or going over the script with him as he's working on them.

Mm-hmm.

going to come up with it.

Imposter syndrome.
150:02
Yeah.
150:03
And then eventually the answer comes.
150:05
So there's different ways to get through it.
150:07
And I've worked all of them in the past.
150:10
Sometimes I'll say, if I'm not sure what to do, I'll say, oh, I know where this chapter, this section ends.

8 MINS LATER

158:31
talking.
25:20
Do you feel at all like that's what you're supposed to write or do you feel pigeonholed in any way?
25:28
Look, I write because I want people to read them.
25:31
And look, I know what my readers have liked, and so I try to write in kind of that.
25:37
But there's less pigeonholing than you'd think.
25:41
Because I try to make each novel very different, even though we know the idea is very simple.
25:46
It's a love story.
25:48
It's going to be set in North Carolina.

15 MINS LATER

40:33
Nicholas, tell her what you were telling us, please.
40:49
Nicholas, tell her what you were telling us, please.
40:52
Well, when I first began writing, I, I ended up writing my novels, uh, in my spare time after work.
41:00
Usually in the evening I would write from e- 8:00 to 11:00 or may- maybe even midnight, and then I'd work my regular shift.
41:08
I'd also write one day on the weekend.
41:10
I had a wife and I had two young children at home, so...
41:15
And I really felt like writing was important to me.
41:17
I wanted to chase a dream, so I made time for it.

11 MINS LATER

52:12
... you're welcome to.
46:10
How did that collaboration begin and what convinced you that it would work?
46:14
Yeah.
46:14
(laughs) It- it kinda began in one of those funny Hollywood ways, right? I had my agent in Hollywood knew someone at Blinding Edge Pictures, and they were talking.
46:24
They said, "Hey, we should get Nick and Night together." And I've heard that, you know, couple dozen times over the last 25 years and usually na- nothing ever happens, but this one, uh, came through.
46:37
We, uh...
46:37
A meeting was set up, and the purpose of that meeting was each of us was going to p- come up with an original story that would work as both a novel and a film and that would work for his audiences and mine, and we were going to pitch each other our stories.
46:55
And that was in May of 2023.
49:16
... to explore?

When you're, when, when the book is going to be made in audio book, do you have a say in who the narrator is?
139:00
Yeah.
139:00
I mean, to a certain extent, I do.
139:02
And they always ask me and I always say, no, I got a funny story about that.
139:07
I did it once for a walk to remember.
139:08
It was so funny.

I thought I was going to like go to this.
