so tell us more about mother space

Neus Gil CortesGUEST
yes so monce who is a mother as well and she's the founder with juliana of trip space i was finishing a gaga class and then came to me and said hey we want to create a residency for choreographers give me ideas about who we could support and And there was an aspect as well from them that they wanted it to not just be about the choreographers and the dance world, but also engage with their community because they also have a lot of people that go there to do yoga and they are based in Hackney in London and they are very involved with the community.

Neus Gil CortesGUEST
So I started thinking and I was like, look, I think mothers could really benefit from this.

Neus Gil CortesGUEST
And it's a part of our identity, you know, that when you become a mother, you sort of have this group of people that you have things in common with.

Neus Gil CortesGUEST
You know, everybody mothers differently, obviously, but... you know just getting into those spaces in which there are more mothers um there are just some conversations that you can have with them and they're sort of nodding in agreement of you know circumstances like dropping your kid in nursery and they they are crying and then you have to go on about your day and particularly mother choreographers i think uh have a real challenge when they are independent choreographers and they are not supported by an institution of A being a female entrepreneur in itself, also the fact that very often as an independent choreographer you have to write applications and all of that time not only is not paid but sometimes you have to pay for it because you have to pay for child care right so when you're not getting paid you're still having to pay and also often if you're based in London we know that very often with the Arts Council you need much funding and much funding is often in kind space but the reality of the in-kind space in in London is that is is very very minimal the organizations that can offer it And what ends up happening is that you're having all of those residences to create work away from London, which again, is away from your kids.

Neus Gil CortesGUEST
And especially if they are really little, can have all sorts of other logistics, for example, breastfeeding, you know? So we were thinking, you know, not only do we need support because of being a group that has specific needs, that need to be accounted for but also because of the fact that you know many people might not even consider being a choreographer because of all of not only the financial risk but also all of the logistics that mean having to be away from home and what's been really incredible is that I've got messages from people all over the world, from people in Australia, from people in the States, just talking about how incredible of an opportunity this is.

Neus Gil CortesGUEST
And we keep saying, sorry, we're based in London and there's only seed funding that might not cover a trip from the States and staying in London.
