um these are a couple of the indulgences i'm now reading from the article that chicago landowner suzy b wilson and her sister allegedly paid for a maserati a luxury condo with millions of dollars illegally raked in for more than 1 000 neglected and distressed properties they owned throughout the south and west sides how does it get to this point well mina bloom i guess i'll start there how long have you been working on this investigation
0:40
It's been three years, John, so it's been kind of a while.
0:44
Yeah, Susie B. Wilson has been dubbed the city's worst landowner.
0:49
I can tell you a little bit more about her.
0:51
So she and her sister, Svedlana Doss, they bought hundreds of properties, mostly on the south and west sides of the city, mostly vacant lots.
1:00
beginning in the 1990s through Cook County tax and scavenger sales.
1:06
And my reporting partner, Casey, and I, we actually first learned about Susie and her sister back in 2023 when we were reporting on rats in Chicago.
5:05
So what have you learned through the now public records, I assume, of the bankruptcy filing?
7:04
In addition to the stay at home orders that, you know, in a lot of cases locked people in their house or in their neighborhood with their abusers.
7:14
Exactly, exactly.
7:15
And I was going to get to that.
7:17
So there were the lockdowns as well, where people were basically trapped at home with their abusive partners.
7:23
And so you've got the economic stressors that I was referring to earlier.
7:28
You've got the lockdowns.
7:30
And so domestic violence, very high at the height of the pandemic.

20 MINS LATER

28:01
I guess my question is like, what hole does Chicago public school try to plug first in this equation?
