Yeah, so what I would say is that the warming is proceeding almost exactly as the climate models predicted.

We did see a surge in warming from 2023 to 2024.

That was related to a very large El Nino event.

And so if you actually look at the overall trend in recent decades, yes, there's been an acceleration because we passed the Clean Air Act, So we stopped the production of sulfur pollution that was actually helping offset some of global warming by reflecting sunlight back to space.

We smartly took steps to clean up the atmosphere, but that unleashed some of the warming that had been masked.

So there was sort of an acceleration in warming following the 1970s, 1980s.

Do the climate models account, I'm assuming that they do, account for and to what extent should we be concerned about things like rapid amplification? For example, the melting of the permafrost, releasing massive amounts of methane that might not have been accounted for a couple of decades ago anyway, you know, methane being, what, 27 times more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide, if I'm remembering correctly.

Back in the late 1990s, my co-authors and I published the, uh, now well-known hockey stick curve that demonstrated how unprecedented the warming of the past century is, and it implicated human-caused climate change, the increase in the concentration of carbon pollution due to fossil fuel burning that was a threat to some powerful vested interests.

And so they focused, uh, a- a whole lot of firepower on me to try to discredit me, to intimidate me, to get me fired from my job.

Um, and I'll tell you, it was sort of like PTSD for me, uh, five years ago when public health scientists like Peter and Tony Fauci found themselves under attack in precisely the same way, the same tactics, um, and even some of the same players.

Um, it's worth noting at the- at the very beginning of George W. Bush's first term, 2000, his own EPA administrator, Republican EPA administrator, Christine Todd Whitman, declared that CO2 is a pollutant that should be regulated under the Clean Air Act.

And it was only later when they got rid of Christine Todd Whitman that they went down this road that takes us to where we are now.

And so, this wasn't always such a partisan, uh, political issue.

President Trump, uh, has started the process of withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement, which set this 1.5 degree threshold. Uh, also easing restrictions on oil and gas production. How does that, uh, impact efforts to, uh, avoid further exceeding this threshold? And what about the general, uh, political climate elsewhere in the world?

The real problem here is that this sort of sends a signal to the rest of the world that, uh, the United States isn't willing to honor its commitments. We're the world's largest legacy carbon polluter. We've put more carbon pollution into the atmosphere than any other country. And that's all that climate cares about. It cares about the cumulative carbon emissions over time. We've contributed more to the warming of the planet than any other country. Fortunately, we have seen some degree of resolve. Uh, the EU remains committed. China seems to be stepping up. I, I think they see an opportunity for actually taking leadership in the vacuum left by US, uh, disengagement under the, uh, new Trump administration. So, it's a global problem. It requires global cooperation. Um, and so we will have to see what other countries do.

And in terms of that global participation, there's long been a debate about the responsibility of developing countries, um, and what they have to do versus developed first world countries like the United States. How does the reaching and exceeding of this 1.5 degree threshold move the needle on that debate?

You know, uh, the combination of the fact that we're getting perilously close to this, you know, new dangerous milestone, uh, and the fact that, uh, this is happening in an era of US disengagement, and it does provide an excuse to developing countries who can rightly say, "Look, you had access to two centuries of cheap, dirty fossil fuel energy to grow your economy, and if you're not willing to do something to help, uh, the world deal with this problem, then why shouldn't we get our own opportunity to grow our economies?" Many of these developing countries have contributed the least to the problem, and they're already bearing the brunt of the problem. They're seeing some of the worst consequences. They have the least wealth and resilience to deal with the consequences that are already, uh, happening. We have to provide some degree of assistance to developing countries to help them deal with the catastrophic consequences they're already dealing with, and to help them sort of leapfrog past the dirty fossil fuel stage of economic development. We wanna see them bypass that. We can't afford them to make the same mistakes that we made, and we have to make it worth their while to move directly to clean, renewable energy sources.
