Denver Pyle, he had been a friend of my dad's out in Paris, Texas.

They had some sort of fundraiser for maybe diabetes or something.

And so Waylon Jennings, who was also a diabetic, came out and my dad had a... or shop at the time.

He'd done the flowers for this thing and somehow became friends with Denver Pyle.

And I guess they spoke on the phone frequently, probably more frequently than Denver Pyle would have wanted to, but... just to be honest.

So in 92, after graduation, I was still working in television and some friends had moved to LA and I ended up being the mooch in their spare room.

Is there any moments when private investors or private collectors do outbid the museums or researchers, and what happens then?

I guess everyone's sort of fatalistic.

Uh, occasionally, really important specimens end up in private collections.

Um, and when I've encountered situations like this, I've had conversations with them and said, "Will you, in your will, you know, commit to sending these specimens to the museum, um, when you're no longer able to look after them?" And generally, people say, "Sure, not a problem." So as long as they turn them over later, that's fine.

The worst thing that can happen, of course, is there isn't a conversation of this kind that takes place, and when the owner dies, or for that matter, loses interest and their partner thinks this is just a bit of rubbish and ends up throwing it out.

And occasionally, this sort of disaster happens or sells it or something.

In Australia, we have very strict rules about the possibility of important fossils being sold overseas.
