What types of information should an employer store in a personnel file?
1:21
Employers should store job-related information that's tied to the employee's work history and job-related information that relates to employment decisions.

This can include hiring materials such as applications and resumes, records of promotion, demotion, transfer, layoff, or termination.
1:40
Also, information that relates to a worker's exempt or non-exempt classification status can be stored and should be stored in personnel files.

And then information relating to rates of pay and salary history, job descriptions, training records, employee handbook acknowledgements, performance reviews, and information relating to disciplinary actions all should be kept in personnel files.

And then in addition to that, there are some states that have specific requirements for what you have to include.
2:12
So you have to make sure you're checking your state law that applies to your business to see what else you may need to keep in there.

So Meryl, is there information that should not be kept in a personnel file?
