What, what is it that you're diving into with that so we can get people a little bit more in touch with that?
1:43
Well, what I'm diving into with that is the fact that, like, you know when you're doing something, whether it's in your career or in the way you're treating a friend or whatever it is, you can kind of feel when you're going against who you really wanna be.
1:55
It doesn't feel great.
1:56
I didn't feel great about how I handled that, whatever it might be.
1:59
And that's where you, where you're running up against your values.
2:02
Like, you might be going against something that you really believe in, and, and you...
2:07
But at the time you might not know that.
5:00
Yes.
2:13
Can you share a little bit more about what you mean? And then how do we teach young people to honor their emotions without letting emotions completely run the show, if you know what I mean?
2:23
Yes, I definitely do.
2:25
Well, and that's why there's a chapter about this in the book.
2:29
It's because...
2:31
Emotions are playing a big part during adolescence because the brain is still under construction, but the emotional center is firing off strong while reasoning and logic are like, but we're back here, you know, a little bit.
2:43
And so what can happen is you feel these like just crashing waves of emotions and you're surrounded by adults way through this phase who are kind of like, calm down, it's one party or, you know, whatever, whatever it may be.
2:55
And so I think that.

30 MINS LATER

32:38
Well,
5:10
How did you end up doing this book? Why you? Why this period of time? Why do you care so much?
5:15
[laughs] Well, you know, I care so much for, well, I think probably two reasons.
5:19
One is that kind of selfish reason of I re- like I said, I wish I'd had this book.
5:23
I really do.
5:24
I, I, I felt so abnormal, and all these emotions were so intense when I was going through adolescence, and it wasn't until I read a book that came out in 1994 called Reviving Ophelia, and it was one of the first real looks at what girls go through during adolescence and the fact that adolescence lasts a lot longer than, like, 17.
5:44
You know, it's really until we're about 25.
5:46
And just the validation of like there's some actual science, like there's biology behind what you're going through.
8:10
Yes.
5:55
Would you share a little bit more about maybe what that has meant for you? Because your career has had some major pivots and maybe some twists and turns that you had not anticipated making.
6:04
Thank you so much for this question.
6:05
I absolutely love it.I think about this all the time because it does, like when you read about some of the stuff that I've done, it's always...
6:12
And they are, they were fabulous.
6:14
They were great.
6:14
And at the time, I was like, "Yes, the, I'm checking off the marks.
6:17
These are great." But what really struck me was, and all of these things actually are what led to further, future things, but there was a time that I went on a trip with- to lead a storytelling workshop for girls who were living in a Syrian refugee camp.
11:03
... a state of play.
