People are promised high returns, but their money is used to either pay off earlier investors or, in most cases, fund a really lavish lifestyle for the person who owns the investment fund.

It is a complete fraud.

So Melissa Caddick, who had the outward appearance of running an incredibly successful financial services firm, was doing nothing more than conning her family and friends out of $30 million.

Her massive deceit, which included defrauding her own parents out of a million dollars, had very humble beginnings.
