Melanie ScheibleGUEST
So I think that we've done something really important in the state of Nevada, and that was in the last special session, we passed a bill that included provisions for what we're calling smash and grab crimes.

Melanie ScheibleGUEST
So what I think came out in conversations with partners and with members of the community is that there was a growing concern about these particular types of crimes where people are going into places of business, we call them smash and grab because they are smashing display cases, they are taking off security monitors, they are breaking bookshelves and cages in order to get to products and take them out of the store.

Melanie ScheibleGUEST
And so once we realized that that was really the crime pattern that people were concerned about, it wasn't that people were concerned about somebody picking up an iPhone that was left behind and it's a crime of opportunity.

Melanie ScheibleGUEST
We implemented a new law that aggregates the amount of the damage and the amount of the merchandise that's taken from the store to create a new felony theft threshold for those retail smash and grab crimes.

Melanie ScheibleGUEST
And so by doing that in the last special session, I think we have bridged the gap so that we're not unintentionally capturing this very low level petty crime that happens when somebody steals a bag that's left behind at a bus station that happens to have a laptop or a cell phone in it, which could easily exceed a low felony threshold.
