I mean I've always been attracted to ghost stories I think and I think something I was thinking about when I was writing the book was how do you tell a ghost story for the 21st century? I did quite a lot of research into sort of ghost stories throughout history.

There's a great book called, I think it's called The Penguin Book of the Undead.

And it has this collection of ghost stories all the way back, I think from like ancient Greece, up to Christendom and further on than that.

And there's this structure or ghost stories have where there's a kind of fixed event in the past which is the death usually but ghosts kind of come to the present always in order to impart a message about a change in social norms or moral codes that kind of the present might have forgotten There's one I read about in ancient Greece, which is about a man comes to a manor in Athens and he hears this clanking of chains all night.

And eventually they discover what's happened is someone's died, but they've been buried improperly.

And once they bury the bones in the right place, the ghost disappears.

And I was wondering what the decision was to kind of structure this book around a series of friendships that are also about the loss of this side of life and perhaps the link between those two things.
