I should be scared and we feel her trauma Yeah, and well Wes Craven, I guess he needed just one more nightmare Because as we get to get into the mindset of Sydney, she is having nightmares about her mum Yes, who Salem's lot tapping on her window? and and that brought me back to the conversation we had in screen two where she was like during the performance was goat's face really there or was she suffering from trauma yeah and now we get to screen three i'm like well now i now i'm not sure because now the for the first time really in the franchise we're seeing dreams or visions or nightmares

it's all playing with this idea as well that the killer is leaving pictures of maureen prescott sydney's mum at the killings you know when they investigate Cotton's death there's a picture there but it's a young Maureen Prescott and like you said you know luckily we've got Sidney to ground us there because as the film looks into more of Maureen Prescott's like younger life before she got married before she had Sidney and what would lead her to have these sexual encounters which would push Billy Loomis to the point to do what he did in the first movie that want to say kind of helps the plot and pace continue because luckily you've got courtney cox and you've got david arquette who for me at this point they were a happy couple in real life you know i was watching them in different films and and different tv shows so now i'm watching them in screen free at that point yeah i hated it i'm like this is too funny you're ruining it this is supposed to be gory and scary and people are supposed to be dying but now i'm older i'm like yeah I get the comedy.

I feel for Gale, you know, maybe with Courtney Cox, cause.
IainHOST
14:32
Speaking of Gale.
GaryHOST
18:33
And we do get to see inside of his office at one point and we see loads of headshots of all of the cast along the top.
GaryHOST
18:39
I was like, oh.
GaryHOST
18:40
They look eerily familiar to the headshots that have been turning up about Maureen Prescott.
GaryHOST
18:47
Hmm, Maureen Prescott, she's about 30 years, 40 years younger in these photos than what we saw in Scream.
John ReedHOST
20:08
So a trailblazing movie, one that we should all love and appreciate.
John ReedHOST
20:12
Um, that being said, in the fictional town of Woodsboro, Sidney Prescott struggles to cope with the approaching first anniversary of her mother Maureen's brutal rape and murder, while the media vulture Gale Weathers hounds the town for a sensational story.
John ReedHOST
20:26
After being attacked in her own home by the costumed killer known as Ghostface, Sidney finds herself under suspicion and intense media scrutiny, leading to a strict school curfew and some heightened local panic in the town.
John ReedHOST
20:38
At a local video store, horror enthusiast Randy Meeks outlines the strict cinematic rules for surviving a slasher movie, such as avoiding sex, alcohol, and saying "I'll be right back." Uh, then we get...
Rob PerryGUEST
22:47
There were a handful of teenagers, but everybody was so into the movie.
Rob PerryGUEST
22:53
There were people screaming at the right, right moments, there were people jumping at the right moments, there were people laughing at the right moments.
Rob PerryGUEST
22:59
And then when I finally got to take my mother to go see it, we went and saw it at the, the, the second, second-time-around theater.
Rob PerryGUEST
23:07
We called it-
Jess MelendezGUEST
32:12
I love Marge so much.
Ryan C. ShowersHOST
32:13
But okay, Marge, M-A, Maureen.
Ryan C. ShowersHOST
32:17
Kevin Williamson, did you name Maureen after Marge? I'd like to know, one.
Ryan C. ShowersHOST
32:22
But two [laughs], there is so much guilt that Marge feels, and she's trying to overcompensate with Nancy.
Ryan C. ShowersHOST
32:28
Like, she was trying to protect her back when they killed Freddy.
Jess MelendezGUEST
33:43
It's, it's late now," you know? End of conversation.
Ryan C. ShowersHOST
33:46
Well, so I have a question.
Ryan C. ShowersHOST
33:47
Let's just say that Maureen didn't die, okay? Maureen Prescott.
Liz EstenHOST
8:01
Like, it's clearly an homage to Hollywood, and they give all this backstory about it's connected to the death.
Liz EstenHOST
8:07
This, the deaths in this movie are connected to deaths in the first movie and the murder of Maureen Prescott before the movies even start.
Liz EstenHOST
8:13
And they try so hard to make this good, but it's so bad.
Liz EstenHOST
8:17
Also, there's clear...
Jon Lee BrodyHOST
13:55
He transformed the wrongful imprisonment and public scandal into celebrity.
Jon Lee BrodyHOST
14:00
But his pursuit of fame isn't simply vanity, because for years he was publicly known as the man who murdered Maureen Prescott.
Jon Lee BrodyHOST
14:05
His face was seen everywhere, but his actual identity was erased beneath someone else's version of him.
Jon Lee BrodyHOST
14:11
And that gives his desire for recognition a deeper psychological foundation because Cotton doesn't merely want attention.

Jon Lee BrodyHOST
33:40
So the first thing, Rena Reynolds.
Jon Lee BrodyHOST
33:41
We've mentioned Rena Reynolds.
Jon Lee BrodyHOST
33:43
The franchises always define Maureen Prescott through other people.
Jon Lee BrodyHOST
33:46
When you think about it, Sidney remembers her as her mother.

BrettHOST
8:49
For this week's movie, we're in the fictional town of Woodsboro, California in the late 1900s.
BrettHOST
8:55
One year after the savage murder of Maureen Prescott and the subsequent imprisonment of Cotton Weary, Casey Becker answers the phone and is met with a friendly voice, who eventually talks to her about scary movies.
BrettHOST
9:09
By the end of the call, Casey and her boyfriend Steve are dead, and Woodsboro will never be the same.
BrettHOST
9:15
For Maureen's daughter Sydney, the nightmare is trying to start over and live a normal teenage life.

13 MINS LATER

BrettHOST
22:09
That's what he sounds like this whole movie.
BrettHOST
22:10
Yeah.
BrettHOST
22:10
But again, to the point you made earlier, this movie like really undersells that like Billy and Sidney started dating around the time that Maureen Prescott dies in this movie.
BrettHOST
22:22
That is something that on first watch, if you're not looking for it, I would understand if you miss it because they do slow roll.
Emily HigginsHOST
21:21
We find out, of course, Cotton was framed, but Sidney doesn't know this.
Emily HigginsHOST
21:25
And everybody's basically like, "Well, I don't know, Maureen Prescott was sleeping with everyone.
Emily HigginsHOST
21:30
Your mom was a hoe, so we don't care." It's a really awful situation to be in.
Emily HigginsHOST
21:35
If you watch Neve in The Craft, it's such a subdued role, and I think it gives you more appreciation for all of the layers that she brings to Sidney, because there's a vulnerability to her role in The Craft that is very different than the vulnerability of Sidney because Sidney is, as much as she is going through it, you never have any doubt that she will still be standing at the end.

39 MINS LATER

Emily HigginsHOST
60:55
There's varying theories, but it's this quick little mention of, like, "Oh, didn't you guys date?" But this is another shade of these men killing people 'cause they feel owed by the women around him, so Casey, Drew Barrymore, is killed because she didn't give Stu whatever, because Stu feels wronged by her.
Emily HigginsHOST
61:14
Women are never safe.
Emily HigginsHOST
61:15
Men in the film use Maureen Prescott's sexuality to control the story around her.
Emily HigginsHOST
61:20
It truly, everyone's like, "Who cares she was murdered? Maureen was having sex with people.
Ryan C. ShowersHOST
23:46
And to me, that kaboom moment, that's what really made the Scream one finale kind of earth-shattering, truly iconic.
Ryan C. ShowersHOST
23:53
We get this again, of course, with Maureen Prescott's backstory.
Ryan C. ShowersHOST
23:56
Um, and I would argue we get it in Scream seven with, uh, you know, the mental hospital.
Ryan C. ShowersHOST
24:00
We were kind of thinking about it was in the conscious, but it wasn't so clear that it was going to be connected to the motive and the killers.
Brian LaGrastaHOST
59:12
So Billy Loomis, ultimately revenge and for framing Sidney's mother.
Brian LaGrastaHOST
59:17
Maureen Prescott had an affair with Billy's father and it destroyed the family.
Brian LaGrastaHOST
59:20
Billy's father had an affair with Maureen Prescott, contributed to his parents' divorce.
Brian LaGrastaHOST
59:24
Billy blamed Maureen for breaking up his family and became obsessed with revenge.
Brian LaGrastaHOST
59:28
His plan was essentially kill Maureen, begin killing people in Woodsboro a year later, frame Sidney's father, Neil Prescott, for the murders, eventually kill Sidney, and create a story where he and Stu appear to be survivors and victims.
Brian LaGrastaHOST
61:32
Sidney's half brother, revealed to be the mastermind behind the original Ghostface killings.
Brian LaGrastaHOST
61:37
Roman Bridger, for jealousy, abandonment, and revenge.
Brian LaGrastaHOST
61:40
Motive: Roman believes Maureen Prescott ruined his life by abandoning him.
Ryan C. ShowersHOST
11:17
And...
Ryan C. ShowersHOST
11:18
i wanted to give the opportunity to see that relationship through and joey he finds this beautiful way of like bringing sydney's story the story of scream um the story of maureen prescott full circle with this script gail is there of course and this script is different because it has her smaller daughters they're very young in elementary school this is very different and contrasted to scream 7 with the grown daughter and tatum who is a teenager It's about Sydney's domestic life and about her relationship with Mark.
Ryan C. ShowersHOST
11:47
So it's a really awesome script.
Ryan C. ShowersHOST
11:49
And my Maureen Prescott fans out there, you will sincerely love it.
Ryan C. ShowersHOST
11:52
So please listen to these three episodes.
Ryan C. ShowersHOST
