think there's i think i think we're hopefully moving past that thing of like trying to sell the industry for the industry i think a lot of people think i have to sell the mystique i have to sell the wonder i have to pretend i'm this i'm like it's better if we're just honest like none of us are making money it's not working for anybody we're drastically underfunded we do a horrible job of showing why we should be funded and but then we still have this like i've tried to talk about this a lot recently with people in art spaces like absolutely like people at government should do more creative bodies could be better but no one's stopping us doing a better job of telling the public why we matter and i don't think we do a good enough job of saying like here's what we bring to your every day and here's actually how arts could change your life and here's why community should be part of arts like nobody needs to have a reason for us to do that and i think we do such a no one's you know for all the content people will make to prove like like this is this or like this shot's this or like look at the way like nobody's ever going like we should make like a run of shorts about why film or why songs are so important everyday life so that the public remember like oh this is important to us So I don't know.

So I think this is where it's good to be honest and be like, because I think sometimes people think, oh, you're doing amazing.

I'm like, I think people all the time say, man, you're killing it.

I'm like, really? I'm sitting at home thinking I've really maybe had my last chance here.

So perception's like a funny thing, isn't it? think it's good to be honest and it's good for other artists to know the journey that's ahead and not think oh it's just going to happen overnight it's not it's going to be hard it's going to be a slog and i think distilling this idea that like wow it just happens it's like it's damaging and it really the the damage at the other end when you've been through that and you've thought that and you've been let down that that's really like detrimental to a person and to an artist and to their confidence and i think just being honest is a great place to go because that's where you sometimes you get around and say hey i asked this much to my experience and put someone else yeah me too and everyone goes maybe we should stand up to these people and tell them it's not an okay experience like if we never talk about it there's never going to be a change There's

no it's great well we're nearly out of time but i've got one more question for you obviously whenever i have you on the podcast i always ask what your closing advice would be and i know i've now asked you this five times have you got

any new advice so you can you could give the same as well i think um the one thing i'd maybe say that i've started to try and like maybe give advice to myself on is just that like like time is time is like not what we think it is and there's no right or wrong time there's just the time you're able to do something so like take time back like i'm trying to you know one of the things i've seen a lot is like do things on your own time and do it at the right time for you and enjoy the time you have off and take moments for yourself because one thing i've had to really keep saying to myself is like you know i've given over a decade to music and like religiously like i'm not gonna let myself be guilty about taking like a year out to have a family because that's a huge thing and i'm only i actually feel like i'm i'll be a better creative for being a dad and Yeah I think don't worry about timing especially for music folk because I think film people understand it a bit better like I feel like you know it's not uncommon to work on a film project from start to finish for like five years say but working on a record for five years would be like unheard of but why like if it's like yeah i think i think just take your time and value your time and know that everything has its time there's a time and place and if you push too hard for something and it's really the thing you love or believe in and then you do it at the wrong time you'll go you know you might look back years there and go you know if I'd actually waited a year you know you could push and say like I know nobody cares about this style of film but I'm going to push it push it push it and it flops but next year that's like a magical hit because of something else and if you'd done it then it would have been a success yeah or that director would have been free or that actor would have been available You don't want to make something because you're like, I need to make something and then you meet an actor who's your dream actor the next year and then you say, would you be in my film? And they go, what film have you got? And you tell them that and they go, I only would have wanted to be in it if it had been that film.
