he worked for a number of years well into his recording career as a psychiatric nurse, and he was an unlicensed psych nurse, and we talked about this when he and I were on the pod.

And he worked in two or three different states, and got a lot of experience working with people who were going through a lot of, like, mental and emotional trauma.

And he decided that, uh, when he was pitched to write a book for the 33 1/3 series, he decided to take that idea, that prompt, and say, uh, there's a kid in a psych ward, and the only thing that connects him to the outside world is his copy of Black Sabbath's Master of Reality.

And I think this is really, I want to kind of touch on this a little bit because I think the other thing that's really interesting about this is that like, do you guys remember when, this was a record that was really special to me because of where I'm from.

Do you remember when Greetings from Michigan, the Great Lake State by Sufjan Stevens came out? Yes.

Yep.

And then there was this thing of like, he's going to do one for every state.

And he did Illinois.

But there is that sense of...

many of the sort of realities that we think about at life are these like chipping away of these ideas we had about what our existence was gonna be like.

And so we have to compromise ourselves.

What's your sense of them as a cult band? Would you call them a cult band?

It's an interesting phrase.

I mean, to me, this is a band that plays theaters.

You know, like, this is a band that's gonna play in Detroit, near where I live, and they're gonna play in this beautiful Masonic Temple building that's a theater that holds, like, 3,500 people.

It's gorgeous.

Like, that, to me, doesn't feel like a cult.

Like, I think what you're getting at, though, is something Scott touched on, which is this sort of, like...

Yes.

This was me.

There's a line in that song that I think... sort of penetrates anybody who had a certain suburban experience when he says, and then Kathy came over and we hung out, trading swigs from the bottle all bitter and clean, locking eyes, holding hands, twin high maintenance machines.

And there's this sense of like when you are 17, you are so desperate to connect with other people.

You forego who you are or you sort of subject yourself to behavior you might not in a more mature state.

But you're so desperate to be loved and to belong.

And he captures that so achingly beautifully in that song.

And there's this idea of like...

What is it about John and his ability to make that so relatable, do you think?

Any comments on San Diego, what it does right, what it could do differently?

San Diego's a really unique place.

We're geographically constrained, right? We have the border, the international border.

We've got the mountains to the east.

We've got the beautiful s- Pacific right out here to the west, and then military base Camp Pendleton to the north, right? We are hemmed in, so land is incredibly valuable and incredibly important anywhere across the board within the county.

Uh, but we're also a very diversified economy, as you said.

The, the defense contractors that are here, the ones that are stalwarts that have been here a long time, and the ones that are new to the industry, we're seeing a ton of activity with them right now.

What's your outlook for office over the next several years?
