So the partial pressure of carbon dioxide in the blood, as probably most of your listeners know, is the balance between the elimination and the production of carbon dioxide.

And in most cases, in clinical settings, we usually think as the partial pressure of carbon dioxide as the rate of elimination and hypoventilation causes hypercapnia.

And it's important to note, I think, that there's been a marked increase in the incidence of hypercapnia among critically ill patients, especially undergoing mechanical ventilation.
