This thing that we're working on here actually has the framing to the interior and the bales are to the exterior, which is why we're doing an exterior plaster.

Beth CochranHOST
But Annie and David were open to some experimentation in an effort to develop a lower carbon exterior finish.

Massey BurkeGUEST
I've watched plaster's weather quicker because our weather regimes in California have changed.

Massey BurkeGUEST
And so now we get a lot more of a combination of windblown rain because we get these atmospheric river storms that didn't used to be a common form and now they're very common.

Massey BurkeGUEST
It can handle getting wet, but when you have driving force behind water, they do weather because clay doesn't set chemically, it just dries.

Massey BurkeGUEST
And so in places in the world where the clay plaster is meant to be the sacrificial layer, that's where they re-plaster every year, like in the Southwest.
