Looking at corruption in Washington, D.C., I was quite shocked the two years that I served in Washington, D.C., that every bill that I voted on was an attack ad, whether it was a yes vote or a no vote.

Just the lack of a willingness to work together between the majority and the minority, just a real... dysfunction in terms of people being overly attached to their party and not working enough for their state.

And Alaskans, we've always, you know, in our short history, we've enjoyed members of our congressional delegation who always worked beyond partisanship.

They always worked with whoever was president, whoever was on the other side of the aisle.

And, you know, Daniel K. Inouye and Ted Stevens, they called each other brother, and they were a Democrat and a Republican.

And we had an effective Senate at that time.

How would you characterize the Trump administration's impact on Alaska, particularly thinking about this new administration?

Yeah

... or whole sections that aren't getting funded at all.

This really goes to illustrate what a dysfunctional system we're currently in, and this is not some kind of partisan jargon.

I think everyone to a person across Alaska is feeling that disconnect between our public servants and our lives.

We can all feel directly, even though it's all, you know, happening in Washington, DC, clear across the continent, we can feel the degree to which the shift has been focused to the agendas of the millionaires and billionaires and not the working households.

So I just went out.

I went to six villages on the Bering Sea Coast in the lower Yukon, and the degree of hardship is just very palpable.
