Just explain what it is in the context of a volcanic eruption.

Yeah, so what we were focusing on, our work is on the caldera, which is like the main conduit of the magma to get out of the volcano.

And we have the luckiest data to be comparing before and after and to see how much the seafloor has changed.

But we also, in collaboration with our international partners from Korea, who also went to the volcano, they got data from the subsurface, so below the ocean floor.

So we could see the actual structure of the volcano.

And what we found is that the vertical subsidence was actually more than what we could see with the bathymetry, with the seafloor mapping.

And we saw that there was around 150 meters of pyroclastic infill And that tells us that actually the subsidence of the caldera was around 1,000 meters.

What's going to need to happen in order to try and monitor its activity?

yeah i guess there's always the argument right so you know if you're looking at from a scientific point of view and we understand the benefits of the sea floor and not wanting to disturb it but when i'm thinking about large cruise ships when i'm thinking about bottom trolling the argument is always it's it's economically better that we allow those large ships to do what they do it's economically better if we allow bottom trolling Where do we draw the line between it being economically important for the country and destroying a natural habitat that's actually essential for us?

Yeah, we've been having these discussions with many institutions.

So we're not saying that we should ban anchoring forever.

We know it's needed, especially for safety purposes.

If there's a ship that needs to be sheltered from bad weather, they need to be anchoring somewhere.

If there's a port congestion, then big cargo ships will have to wait to get their place into the port.

But there are different management measures that can be placed.

When you're doing this survey, what are you hoping, as well as getting an understanding of what the seafloor looks now and how it's changed, what are you hoping to do with this analysis? What's the end goal of this kind of research?
