How do you feel about orthotics today?

I'm really glad you asked that question because since meeting Dr. Terry, I've had some thoughts about my 40 years in practice, and I kind of came to this conclusion.

There are some pretty pathologic feet that need some form of support or balancing.

Let's talk about the first metatarsophalangeal joint, gout, arthritis, turf toe, whatever.

There is no way in the world that a patient with arthritic first MTP joint is going to be able to walk normally without surgery or without putting something in their shoe that makes them a little bit more balanced or at least takes the pressure off the joint.

Because as you know, you go to propel off of your heel, you're going to have a substantial limp and then eventually have knee pain, hip pain, back pain, lumbar pain, neck pain.

So, um, that's what made me think about the fact that I, I would probably never give up on the idea of an orthotic for an arthritic first MP joint, or even some of the lesser second, third, fourth, fifth.
