I think there are several levels to that, which are very interesting because they're kind of interconnected.

Of course, the easiest is for a movement to transform its movement pressure into elected office.

Then that is the easiest way to translate legitimacy into it.

But sometimes, and in most cases, it doesn't really work.

So this is where the challenge becomes about movements being able to structure their pursuit or follow up on existing people in power, which basically means holding them accountable.

And accountability requires the ability to mobilize people to follow on issues.

So how should movements navigate that tension? When does engagement with the state strengthen a movement versus weakening it?
