Ep 16: Discussing NFL Replay with NFL VP Mark Butterworth
T
27:36Tim GlazeHOST
Like, is there, like, what is the, what's the attitude or what's the approach to maintaining the tradition of football and, like, steering it towards, uh, a future that kind of makes sense for the game of football?
M
27:52Mark ButterworthGUEST
Um, my number one job is to protect the shield, and that's the integrity of the game.
M
27:57Mark ButterworthGUEST
We have millions of fans tuning in to watch NFL football, and understanding the history, I was fortunate enough to work at the Pro Football Hall of Fame for 14 years, and just, just to have that extra grounded sense of the history of the game and the people that helped build the game to where it is today, and, and to be in a role now to be, uh, a small steward for the continued success and innovation of pro football, where years ago they allowed the forward pass, and then, you know, th- then they w- talked about overtime, an onside kick, things like that.
M
28:32Mark ButterworthGUEST
So from a replay perspective, whatever we can do to help further not only the integrity of game, but the enjoyment of the game, because you think about how fans have watched the game from the 1950s to the '70s, to the early '90s to today.
M
28:48Mark ButterworthGUEST
Instead of watching it in front of a TV screen, people are watching it on their phones, on, on their tablets.
M

They're, you can s- you can go out to a bar and watch a multitude of games.

Are we trying to get it right, or do you have to, is there like a, a threshold that you have to meet that maybe rest of our s- fans and on internet maybe don't have to understand?
M
15:58Mark ButterworthGUEST
So Pat, we have 17 officiating crews, so we have 17 replay officials, and when they're looking at everything, we set a very high standard, and we want consistency across that standard.
M

So then if and when it comes back to this room, Art McNally Game Day Central, and we need to either confirm or overturn a ruling on the field from a replay perspective, we wanna make sure that there's clear and obvious video eviden- evidence to overturn that call.
M
16:21Mark ButterworthGUEST
The key for us is what's the ruling on the field, and do we have clear and obvious video evidence to overturn that call?
M
19:21Mark ButterworthGUEST
We typically, for flags on the field, there's certain things re- uh, from a replay assist perspective, you talk about face mask, we're s- we can actually, as long as we see the closed part of the hand on the face mask, we'd leave it down.
