Can you explain exactly what is part of it and also maybe what is not part of it that people sort of get a bit confused about?
10:24
Yeah, sure.
10:25
So it's already the case with triple zero that if your normal network faces an outage, you'll still be able to call triple zero using any other available network.
10:36
Your phone will automatically camp on to another network to be able to make that triple zero call.
10:42
But what temporary disaster roaming does is is take that to the next level.
10:46
It's more than just triple zero calls.
10:49
You'll be able to make normal voice calls so you can stay in touch with family and friends and loved ones during an emergency.
11:43
What do they see? Do they see that they get an alert on their phone? Does it say something at the top of the screen to say that you're not on Telstra, you're on a different network, for example? What is the behaviour of the handset?
1:18
Is nationalising the triple zero system, is it a good idea?
1:22
Look, it doesn't address the problems that we've seen over the last 12 months because what we've seen occur when the Senate Committee was writing this report, we've seen network outages.
1:33
Optus had an outage on its network.
1:35
It was not an outage of the 000 service itself.
1:39
000 is effectively a call centre which is operated by Telstra.
1:44
It receives your call and then it sends that call to the relevant state-based emergency service operator.
1:50
That service has operated in exceeding all of its performance standards.
5:43
What other gaps are there in the system?
42:30
So what are scammers doing to get at people via telcos?
42:35
Well, we know that scammers are absolute experts at targeting major events like the census where people might have their guard down.
42:43
They're expecting a phone call or a text message about something so they might be more likely to click on a link.
42:49
So we just want people to be as vigilant as possible.
42:52
The Australian Bureau of Statistics, which is running the census, will never ask you for your bank details.
42:59
They will never ask you for credit card information.
43:02
These should be huge red flags If you're getting a phone call from someone claiming to be from the census, hang up.
43:33
Have you had any evidence of this happening yet or are you just trying to get in ahead of time?
2:31
Cheers.
2:32
I take no credit for that.
2:34
Chelsea Flower Show is like the main flagship garden flower show that everybody knows about.
2:38
A number of regional shows across the country and at one of those they have a young designer competition, which is an opportunity for designers under the age of 30 to come up with a concept and a design and submit it.
2:49
And you essentially then, if you get selected, you get a bursary from the RHS, which goes towards obviously the build of the garden, which depending on how ambitious is, it costs quite a lot.
3:01
To do sponsorship yourself, like separately, self-funded or goods in kind or private sponsorship.
3:07
So I went down that route and be as ambitious as possible with the design and then try and find the funding later down the lines.
7:02
so can you walk me around it and show me what your thinking is and i'm interested in these i know they're meant to be basalt columns so do you want to just go yeah
49:54
Now, is this an innocuous ship that we're seeing circumnavigating southern Australia? Or what sort of activities could Chinese intelligence be undertaking on vessels like this?
50:08
We have seen examples from around the world of where what appears to be a civilian vessel or a research vessel has accidentally dropped its anchor and cut through submarine cables.
50:21
It happened late last year in the Baltic Sea.
50:24
It has happened more recently in Taiwan.
50:27
And so I think that we... should really see this as a bit of an alarm bell going off, that we have a vessel that is very close to critical infrastructure off the coast of Australia.
50:38
These submarine cables carry 99% plus of Australia's internet traffic.
50:44
It is the very definition of critical infrastructure.
51:17
What more can we do, though, to protect the cables?
