Farm for margin, not just yield: How to protect grain profitability
2:47

Ivor PriceHOST
And I'm wondering how should farmers shift their thinking from yield maximization to profit per hectare in the current market conditions?
L
2:56Lukas MeyerGUEST
The shift is really from asking the question of how do I produce the biggest crop to rather ask the question in terms of how do I rate the best return per hectare.
L

That means the seed choice, plant population, and not necessarily to say plant population should be high or plant population should be low, Plant population should be optimized.
L

The fertilizer program, all the chemicals in the crop protection program, and then crop marketing, marketing the grain, all need to be viewed through a profitability lens.
L

Yield still very much matters, but it must pay for itself and it should not be at the cost of profitability.

Ivor PriceHOST
With tighter margins, where should farmers be most focused at the moment when it comes to input cost management?
L
6:35Lukas MeyerGUEST
In my view, at least farmers should focus on the costs that have the biggest impact on yield and margin.
L

That includes, like I said, seed placement, making sure the right hybrid on the right hectare, the correct fertilizer program and the efficiency of that program.
