How far into like the songwriting process did you kind of figure, okay, these are the flourishes I need to add to each song to give it that, you know, that specific identity within the track and how did they kind of fit together on the EP as a whole to make sure that they all had their own identity within the bigger piece?
8:17
Yeah, I feel like that's actually something I've struggled with in the past.
8:21
I've always, like, written something and then gone to the studio and have a really specific idea of what I want it to sound like.
8:29
And then I just end up being disappointed because it's never going to be, like, exactly... how you hear it.
8:34
Well, sometimes it is, but sometimes it's also not in my experience.
8:37
So with the CP, I really tried to just go into the studio and just kind of do whatever happens and not have this clear picture of what the end project was going to sound like.
8:50
Like, Butterhouse was a really good example of that.

Sorry, we've hit you with the big one straight up.
15:01
I'm wondering whether you might share, I guess, where the song came from, where it was born from, and then how we got it from that initial idea to what is on the EP.
15:14
Thomas was a song that I wrote after.
15:17
It's about going to a gig and realising that the only reason why you're at that gig is because you're there to see somebody that you're not really supposed to see.
15:28
And they're not there, and you kind of feel like an idiot.
15:31
And that's kind of how it stemmed for me.
15:35
But yeah, it was just a song that I wrote.
15:37
I was experiencing a lot of writer's block when I wrote that song, and I tuned my guitar to my default.
17:55
What was it that originally turned your, your mind to go? I would love to put pen to paper and try getting out my feelings and, and put a melody behind it, I guess.
1:21
[laughs]
1:21
... and like bars and..." You know? I, I...
1:24
That's what I loved doing and that's what I just saw for myself and, and then I saw what...
1:30
I went to a school called Music Industry College, and people like Asha Jefferies and Thelma Plum went to that school, and when I saw what they're doing and what they can do, I was like, "Oh, maybe I can, you know, shoot for a little bit higher." And, um, just started releasing and yeah, Happy Birthday was my first song that I put out and, um, I just kind of knew that I, I didn't really want to do anything else from there.
2:21
Yeah
2:22
...
2:22
I think, to be totally honest.
2:24
Um, just to do music full time and to tour the world and to see the world and, um, write with people that I look up to as well, and just connect with people all over.
3:33
Can you take me through sort of how the EP was pulled together over the last couple of years?
3:38
Um, I wrote Important to You December, October 2024.
3:43
Um, and I think that's kind of where The Boathouse era, if you will, started.
3:49
[laughs] Yeah, I think Bug was very much about me falling in love for the first time and falling out of it.
3:56
And then The Boathouse was about me trying to figure out more who I am when just dating as a 20-year-old and, um, finding out what I do like and what I don't like, and how much love I have to give and who I should give it to.
4:15
Yeah, it's, I think it touches on all of that, whether it's just the light-hearted, not that deep side of things, and the really scary side of things too when it, when it's someone's mental health involved as well.
6:00
Mm-hmm.
6:00
I am very inspired by her.
4:41
Is that a question that you get asked often? Because I used to do the music thing too, and every family Christmas and gathering, it was always like, how's the little music thing going? It's so condescending, isn't it? I
4:51
know.
4:52
I've actually got a very, very supportive family.
4:54
Oh, that's good.
4:54
There's definitely some that maybe aren't so, like...
5:01
I don't know.
5:02
It's hard to pin down, but most of my family are really...
7:03
Wait, are you on Tinder or are you on Hinge?
6:42
Yes.
6:43
Um, I feel like subconsciously it's a place I go to, to just...
6:48
It, it's v- it's very calming, and I think it's kind of like a peacekeeper in, like, hard, difficult conversations.
6:54
Um, I wrote these songs when I was, like, just dating, to be honest.
7:01
Um, I-
7:15
No. [laughs]
7:16
[laughs] Um, but no, I, like, my first EP Bug is very much about my first experience of being in love and falling in love for the first time.
7:25
And then I think The Boathouse is about what happens after that, and trying to date and trying to discover, you know, what you want from a person, how much you'll tolerate from a person.
RhysHOST
10:19
Can you explain to me how that one came about?
10:23
Yeah, absolutely.
10:23
Yeah.
10:25
Well, this was also somebody that wasn't in my life for a very long time.
10:28
It was probably, like, less than six months that I knew this person.
10:35
He...
10:37
This was, like, straight after I had gotten out of...
