On a warm winter's day in St. Augustine, Florida, I woke up in a stranger's house.

It was January 2020, and the strangers were in fact my aunt and uncle.

I was in the guest room off of the first floor of an open concept kitchen and living room, and in the kitchen I could hear my aunts and uncle, cousins, grandma, and my biological father, none of whom I had spoken to in almost 20 years.

I was bracing myself to open the door and cross 20 years worth of separation.

A month before finding myself in this intimidating predicament, I had been in a cabin in snowy Colorado on a silent retreat.

I was sitting in front of a fireplace on my last night, just kind of soaking in the graces.
